Not So Cool With The Fingerbobs Music On Are You ?

So there I was the other day, riding on the Metro and feeling quite cool. I had my shades on, I was dressed quite well and I now have a tan. So, I was fairly pleased with myself. A few other people got on, also cool, and they regarded me with approval as if to say 'yeah, that guy is cool'. Better still I had the old iPod on and was listening to some cool tunes. The sun was out, everyone had their summer clothes on, and we all felt very happy with things.

But the thing is, I'm not cool. Never have been, never will be. And don't think I haven't tried, but you see the thing about being cool is you don't try to be it, you either are or you aren't. And I'm not. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure that anybody else is either. There's no infallible test, and it could be that some people are just better at faking it than others. Perhaps inside the very coolest of cool people, rages a storm of inferiority that is completely invisible to the observer. I don't know, but what I do know is that I can't even fake it effectively.

This is amply demonstrated by some of the music on my iPod. Oh sure, there's some modern stuff on there like Radiohead that I have to try and be cool, but which I don't actually like and consequently never listen to. Much more in evidence is music from films and er, telly shows that I happen to like. So, imagine the scene, there I am on the Metro, floating along on my bubble of cool, and surrounded by fellow cool people. Then, my iPod (which is on random play), moves from a song by The Hives, to the theme music from 'Fingerbobs' the classic although rather weird 1970's children's TV show. My cool bubble is instantly destroyed, I realise that I really am a nerdy little git and I look forlornly at my reflection in the window as I glide along to 'Fingerbobs'. And if that wasn't enough, the theme from 'Bod' followed straight after. I think I'll stick to my anorak in future.
